Hello, Sparkling One, I'm Dee Diaz, your host and Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, and I'm so excited to have you here with me today. Thank you for choosing to spend this time with me. Before we jump into today's topic, I want to quickly introduce the Sparkling Life Coach Podcast to any new listeners.

That's reducing toxicity in our personal care products. Yep, that stuff we put on our skin, our hair, and our teeth every single day could be sneaking harmful chemicals into our bodies without us even realizing it. But don't worry, by the end of this episode, you'll feel empowered and you'll know how to take control of what you expose your body to, starting today. 

What’s a Toxin?

But first, let's take a step back. If you were able to listen to my last episode, we talked about what exactly a toxin is, how to reduce toxins aromatically, and the importance of removing toxins from our cleaning products. But let's review. A toxin is any substance that places unnecessary stress on your body. This includes chemicals found in your personal care products. Things like parabens, phthalates, and sulfates. 

Why Toxicity Matters

These chemicals have been linked to everything from hormone disruption to cancer. So, toxicity really matters. Let me tell you a quick story. Several years ago, I was constantly feeling fatigued. I had headaches out of nowhere, my skin was breaking out like crazy, and I had issues with my respiratory system. I thought it was stress, or maybe diet, but as I dug deeper, I found that the products I was using daily, everything from my shampoo to my face cream, toothpaste, and soap, were loaded with harmful chemicals.

When I realized this, it was a total wake-up call. So I started researching cleaner alternatives and made the switch. And I can tell you firsthand that my energy came back. My skin cleared up. My breathing issues improved and I felt so much better. My body was no longer battling the toxic overload it was dealing with every day.

So the good news is you have control over what you put on your skin and into your body. 

The Reality of Toxins in Personal Care Products 

So, let's start with a mind-blowing statistic. Did you know that an American woman uses an average of 12 personal care products that contain 168 different chemicals every single day? That's a lot for our bodies to handle, right?

Now think about this. Your skin absorbs up to 60 percent of what you put on it. That's right. 60 percent of those chemicals could be making their way into your bloodstream. And trust me, most of them are not good for you. It's a little overwhelming when you start thinking about it. And it's not just women.

Men and children are also exposed to toxins from shampoos, lotions, sunscreens, deodorants, you name it. The big issue here is that many of these chemicals can disrupt your hormones, irritate your skin, and over time even contribute to more serious health concerns like reproductive harm and cancer. But don't panic - we're not here to live in fear. We're here to take charge. 

The Importance of Reducing Your Toxic Load 

Managing your toxic load is key to overall health. Now, our amazing bodies are designed to handle a certain amount of toxins. We have a built in detoxification system that works every day through our liver, our kidneys, and our skin. But when we overload our bodies with too many toxins, they start to take a toll on our health.

You might feel more tired, get sick more often, or develop skin issues. And in my case, my body was already in a weakened state, so it was urgent that I course correct. Think of it this way. Your body is like a cup. Every day, we're adding to that cup with the products we use, the air we breathe, the food we eat.

When that cup overflows, that's when we start experiencing the negative effects. And here's the thing, you can empty your cup by reducing exposure and supporting your body's natural detox processes. So, I'm going to share with you three practical steps that you can incorporate into your life starting today. 

STEP 1:  Identifying Common Toxins: Breaking It Down 

Now, if you're like me, when I first heard about toxins in personal care products, I thought, okay, but where do I even start? The first step is identifying the toxins. To identify toxins in your personal care routine, just think about the products you use every day. Soap, shampoo, lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, sun care, moisturizer, makeup and perfume, that sort of thing.

Start by grabbing those bottles or tubes and checking those labels. Do you see ingredients you can't pronounce? That's usually a sign they might not be the best for you. You might see ingredients like parabens, sulfates, phthalates, or synthetic fragrances. All of these can be harmful over time. For example, parabens, which are often found in lotions and creams, have been linked to hormone disruption.

And phthalates, frequently present in fragrances can impact your reproductive system. You might even find formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen, in some nail polishes and hair straighteners. Crazy, right? Is there a warning label? Like, have you noticed your toothpaste tube says DO NOT SWALLOW and has directions to contact poison control if you do? Um, what's up with that? Then, should it be in our mouth, on our teeth, or in our children's mouths? I don't think so. Do you? Here's a crazy fact. While more than 40 countries, like the European Union, have banned over 1, 400 toxic chemicals in personal care products, the U.S., yeah, they've only banned nine. 9. Toxic chemicals versus 1, 400. That's a huge gap. According to the EWG, the Environmental Working Group, "exposure to some chemicals used in cosmetics and other personal care products has been linked to serious health problems including cancer and reproductive harm". When I realized this, it was a total wake-up call for me, and I started researching cleaner alternatives.

 So, check out your personal care products and tally up how many toxic chemicals are bombarding your body on a daily basis. You may be unpleasantly surprised. It's time to take control of what we're putting on and in our bodies. 

STEP 2: Reducing Toxic Load: Simple Changes That Matter Okay, so now that we know what to look for, let's move on to Step Two and talk about how to start reducing your toxic load. It's all about making intentional swaps, what I like to call Ditch and Switch

Now, by that, I don't mean that you have to throw out everything in your bathroom cabinet right this second. If you can, great. But if it's not in the budget, Then over time, start replacing the toxic products you're currently using with clean, natural alternatives. That's what I did. I started researching cleaner alternatives and made the switch. One of the biggest things I've learned in my own journey is that you don't have to make all the changes all at once, especially if you're on a tight budget. It's all about small, intentional shifts. For example, when I started, I ditched my regular deodorant, which was packed with aluminum, and switched to a natural one. And my toothpaste, that warning label on the tube, yeah, that shocked me. So that was one of the first things to go.

When I checked my old face moisturizer, I found something called methylparaben. I looked it up and discovered it's linked to endocrine disruption, which can totally mess with your hormones. After that,it was a no brainer to make the switch to a clean alternative that used natural ingredients like aloe and essential oils.

These were small steps, but over time, it made a big difference. Cause my body is no longer battling the toxic overload it was dealing with every day.
