If you've been following our Wellness Lifestyle series, you've heard me mention this before. When you think of the Wellness Lifestyle Pyramid, think of your health like stacking blocks.

In our last episode, episode 18, we talked about movement and this episode is going to be all about metabolism because these foundational aspects of the wellness lifestyle pyramid impact all other aspects of your health and well-being.

As our next topic will be on the importance of rest as a part of our wellness lifestyle. So, let's start here. What is metabolic health and why is it important? Well, good metabolic health means that your body can digest and absorb nutrients from the food you eat with healthy and stable levels of blood sugar, blood fat, and insulin.

Now, it's natural to have fluctuations, but it's important to avoid big spikes because that can negatively affect our long-term health. So today, we're going to discuss the 5 pillars that will help you to optimize your metabolism. Number 1 is Healthy Eating Number two is Daily Movement, three is Healthy Connections, four is Stress Management, and five is Smart Supplementation.

There are also six obstacles to metabolic health that we must overcome, and I'll cover those shortly. But first, let's talk about things that are going to get in your way of living younger, longer. And one of the things that's really going to cause us problems as we age is high-stress levels. It's so dangerous that it's been compared to smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.

Can you believe that? It causes the same or more damage to our bodies than smoking cigarettes. But now I want you to think about what's getting in your way. Which one of the following is your biggest challenge? Is it stress? Lack of exercise? I hear you on the lack of exercise. Everyone goes through those seasons, right?

And I'm in it. Is it sleep? Are you not sleeping through the night, waking up, and not getting back to sleep? How about nutrition? Are you wanting to improve your diet and put more things in your body that are nourishing and provide more health? Is it toxins? Are you worried about our exposure to toxins, heavy metals, the consumer products we use in our homes, on our skin, and what's found in our food, in our environment?

So many cancers are caused by environmental toxins that are preventable. All of it increases our exposure to toxins, further endangering our health. And then we have our own personal risk factors. We might face health challenges simply because of the world in which we live. With high stress jobs and jam-packed schedules, we feel like we don't have time for exercise and quality sleep.

So, you can understand why these poor lifestyle factors can also affect our metabolic health. Unhealthy eating and physical inactivity threaten our metabolic health, which can then lead to further challenges. So, write down for yourself the top one or two areas you feel you need to and we'll circle back to what you can do about this.

The big question is, what's it costing you? Nutritional deficiencies can lead to serious issues or make existing conditions even worse. Depending on the deficiency, your body may suffer from a wide range of issues like fatigue, weak bones, threats to cardiovascular health, and more. But even beyond those health impacts, think about how it affects your interactions with your kids or your family and friends when you're feeling exhausted.

Think about how it impacts your job when your brain is fuzzy. Think about how you're feeling mentally and emotionally each day. Nutritional deficiencies are about so much more than a health diagnosis, right? It can cost us physically, emotionally, mentally, and even socially. So, which of these areas most impact you?

Write it down. Any one of these will definitely be challenging. Now, how many people are affected by poor cardiometabolic health? This statistic blew my mind. Would you be surprised to learn that under 7 percent of US adults have optimal cardiometabolic health? Yes, for every 14 people you meet, 13 have sub-optimal metabolic health and many don't even realize it.

So that means that everyone you love is or will most likely be impacted by this. Your parents, your spouse, your kids and grandkids, and your best friends. That's a lot. To be honest, before I learned about our body's metabolic processes, I always just thought that low metabolism, or one that's not working, had to do with weight, and how our bodies process food.

And that is true, but as you'll see, it affects so many other things. A study of 55, 000 U. S. adults reviewed health markers like blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol. These can predict future quality of life and lifespan. So knowing your biomarkers is crucial. Do you know your biomarkers for blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol?

Are you in a healthy weight range? It's important to keep track of this information. We'll talk more about this on a later episode of the podcast, but this is why proactive medical care is so crucial. Do you know people who look years younger than they really are? Or others who are the opposite and seem older than they should?

This phenomenon isn't just about physical appearance, though. People can appear at different ages on a cellular level too. It's called biological age. It's a measure of how young your cells appear based on their health and function. Interestingly, recent research from Harvard and other top tier organizations shows that the connection between metabolic health and biological age is inseparable.

So, there's a connection between lifespan and healthspan. It's true that medical advances are helping people live longer. But lifespan has exceeded healthspan, meaning we're living longer overall, but not necessarily with the quality, vitality, and health needed for living a fulfilling, powerful life. In fact, for the most part, the last eight years of life are statistically inhibited when it comes to joy because of health limitations.

So, it's time to close the gap because there's a big difference between your lifespan and your potential health span. And it's not just the effects of aging. Life is full of stressors that can make you feel older than you are. You can get aches, struggle with sleep, experience brain fog, or take longer to bounce back when you do get ill.

It might feel like you're working overtime just to get through the day. But is that really how we want to live each precious day of our lives? Is that how we want to feel in the extra years gained through medical advances? No, right? So, what's preventing us from living vibrantly? Because, the truth is, we can control how we feel.

I'm sure most of you are familiar with the idea that lifestyle choices affect your physical appearance. Remember, only 6. 8 of the population has optimal cardiometabolic health, and metabolic imbalances contribute to the appearance of early aging. And by that, we don't mean that we're trying to look young forever.

But, if we can feel young in our bodies and still do all the things we'd like even in advanced age, then isn't that what we want? The same is true of our biological age, our actual age. Even with genetic factors, our lifestyle choices make a big difference. So, it's like genetics loads the gun, but it's our lifestyle that pulls the trigger.

So, you may have something in your genetics that maybe predisposes you to a certain thing. But then, what you choose in your lifestyle, nutrition, sleep, stress, all the things that we're talking about, that will pull the trigger for those genetic problems. What if I told you, it is possible to take control of your metabolic health?

There are things that we can change. Just because your family has this or that, you start to realize that a lot of it is related to lifestyle. The same list of things that makes you look old on the outside makes your cells act old on the inside. And that means the stronger and healthier your metabolic function, the younger you'll feel from the inside out.

And it's time to close that gap between lifespan and healthspan. So, how do we close that gap? Interestingly, even for the average healthy person, aging markers begin showing in our 20s. By the time we reach 50, our body produces about half the NAD plus it did when we were 20. What's NAD plus? NAD plus. It stands for nicotinamide adenine dinonucleotide.

NAD plus is responsible for two reactions in the body. Metabolic function, which converts food and nutrients into cellular energy. And cellular integrity, which protects your cellular energy factories. What does that mean? It means that as we age, our NAD plus levels steadily fall and decline. And so does our metabolic function, which plays a crucial role in cellular wellness.

Because our metabolism influences our weight, our body composition, energy, and even cognitive performance, that's why it's important to take control of your metabolic health to close the gap between lifespan and healthspan.
